How to Create a Connected, Loving Relationship
Can you notice something with me, for a moment?
Right now, before you read another line... everything in your life is exactly as it is. The relationship you're in, or the one you're still longing for. The conversation from last night that's sitting in your chest. The thing you wish your partner would finally understand.
It's all here. And it's all perfect, as it is.
I don't mean it's comfortable. I mean that nothing has gone wrong. And the moment we can sit inside that... something in us stops fighting.
Here's what I've come to see, over and over, in my own life and in the lives of everyone I work with: the connected, loving relationship you're looking for is not something you go out and get.
It's something you be.
Why the relationship you want is an inside job
Let me tell you about a woman I worked with.
She was exhausted. Truly exhausted... from her relationship. She'd spent years talking about it, thinking about it, giving him one more chance after another. And underneath all of it was an internal fight that never went quiet.
So I asked her a simple question. What would happen if you could just have peace and love here?
She said, "I can't have that. I've never had that."
And I said... it makes it pretty hard to be in a relationship when you can't have peace in yourself. When you've got that internal battle going on.
That's the whole thing, really. We think the conflict is between us and them. Most of the time, the conflict is inside us... and our partner is simply the place it shows up.
The lens you're looking through
There's something I want you to think about for a moment, because it changes everything.
If you're trying to have a loving relationship with your partner, and you're looking through the lens of not being worthy... or not being loved... then the relationship has to play out that way. It has to.
Not because it's fate. Because it's a filter.
We don't see our partners as they are. We see them through whatever we've decided we are. If we've decided we're not loveable, then every silence becomes rejection. Every distraction becomes evidence. Every small moment gets quietly gathered up as proof, until we can say, "See? It's always the same."
But it isn't them repeating. It's us looking through the same lens and calling it a relationship.
What's really happening when you're triggered
Now. The trigger.
When conflict rises, something in you tightens. Your chest, your jaw, your belly. And in that moment, an older self takes the wheel. Your ego. Your old identity. The part of you that learned, a long time ago, how to stay safe and survive.
It isn't evil. It's just energy that's been living in your house while you've been away (internally, when you're not present). And here's what I've learned about that energy: you don't fight it. You don't coerce it. You let it move, and you let it dissolve back into the light. Because when you become truly present with the moment, it's like you turn a light on inside, and the darkness or shadows disappear.
Every enemy you have in this life is just your ego in disguise. Including the one you've made out of the person sleeping next to you.
The behaviour you're ashamed of... the snapping, the withdrawal, the cold silence, the keeping of score... is not who you are. It's an old identity doing what it was built to do.
And the good news is, you get to choose whether you keep living inside it.
Your partner is not the source
I want to share something that cracked open in me years ago, because I think it's the hinge this whole thing turns on.
I was single. My marriage had ended. I wanted so badly to feel loved and connected... so I did what most of us do. I went looking for it.
And then, one morning in a meditation, I heard a voice: "You will find love today." That night, when I came home alone and got into bed, I swore at Spirit saying, "You are so full of shit." Minutes later, an energy pinned me to the bed with such profound love that I'd never felt anything like it. I found myself in a profoundly deep, blissful state which stayed with me for about a month.
What I understood in that moment is this: I am always connected to Source, to life itself. I cannot not be loved.
Sit with that one for a second. I cannot not be loved.
Which means the love you're waiting for your partner to prove to you is already yours. The problem was never that they weren't giving it. The problem was that we were looking for an outside source to fill something that only ever gets filled within.
When you're being love, you're not trying to get love. There's no trying. There's just being. And from that place, your partner stops being the person who owes you something... and becomes the person you get to see.
So what do you actually change?
Here's the honest part, and it's where a lot of people turn back.
You don't change your partner. You don't change your circumstances. You change the lens (your view), and you change who you're being.
That's it. That's the whole work. Everything else is a symptom.
Stop trying to fix them, and start noticing who you're being. When we're in the old identity, we're always trying to push. Pushing them to understand, to change, to show up differently. But the moment we're in an area where there's resistance or disturbance... there's some form of conflict in our own consciousness. The disturbance is information. It's showing you where you're not at peace. Not with them. In you.
Let the peace come first, not later. You can't fix a relationship from inside the storm. Peace isn't the reward for sorting everything out. Peace is the starting point that makes the sorting unnecessary.
Be yourself, and give them permission to be themselves. This one changed how I show up with everyone I love. You don't need them to be a certain way for you to be at peace. And the strangest thing happens when you stop needing that... they stop being the enemy.
When you're triggered, don't fight it. Witness it. The contraction in your body is not a signal to attack or to run. It's an old pattern asking to be seen. Meet it with kindness. Sit with it in love. No searching for an answer, just acceptance. And notice that when you don't react, you've given the whole thing back.
A little of the how
I said I'd stay light on the how, and I will. But there is a simple practice underneath all of this, and it's yours to use tonight.
When the conflict rises... pause. Before the next sentence. Before the door closes. Before the story about what they meant begins to write itself.
Bring your attention in. Become aware of how you feel, and let that feeling drop down, all the way to the centre of the earth. Feel yourself held. This helps calm your nervous system.
Ask yourself one honest question: who am I being right now? And this isn't to beat yourself up.
Not who are they being. Not what did they do. Who are you being.
Because if something is happening in your life, it's happening because of the thinking you've been putting in. And if you can see the lens, or the perception you're viewing life through... you can choose a different one.
There's no force in this. No battle. You're not trying to become a better person. You're coming home to the one you already are.
You don't have to do this alone
This is the work I do every single day inside the Conscious Creating Mastery (CCM) membership group. The healing, the clearing, the coming home to the I AM within yourself, the presence underneath the personality... and then the very real, very human business of living it in a relationship that has bills and dishes and old wounds in it.
You are the predominant creative power in your life. That was never taken from you. It just got covered over by an old self that decided it wasn't safe to be loved.
If you'd like to go deeper, if you'd like to actually walk this path with me instead of just reading about it, I want you to come and join us in CCM.
Because the relationship you're longing for is standing right there. It always was.
It just wants you to be the one who shows up.
Blessings, Douglas
